Spanish/EFL 2.0 for Valentine's Lesson

LingTECHguistics goes heart-sy!

I think that, at times, I have an unhealthy fascination with Valentine's Day. It all begins in mid-January. After that, everything from that day on turns red, pink, and heart-shaped.

This lesson was made using www.cryptogram.com, a website where you create your own candy hearts.

At first, I did the slide myself to conduct a lesson on colors and numbers in Spanish.

Then, it occured to me that, given the correct terminology and exposure to the KEY WORDS to be heard, the kids could easily do this slide, or something similar, themselves.

LESSON PLAN/PROCESS:

Practice the LingTECHlingo prior to the lesson. Emphasize that the LingTECH words today will be a) abre b) corta c)pega d) abre e) guarda f) cierra- Remember to ALWAYS do this LingTECHlingo along with the students so that the kinesthetics do the job of remembering commands
Introduce the Valentine's Vocabulary , use this one if neccesary. The focal word will be "Corazón" (the word that they will hear most consistently)

3. The Sustained Affective Stimulus will be creating the hearts at www.cryptogram.com. While you do the activity together, have them write the color on the correct heart and save the heart: KEY WORDS: Escribe el color, guarda el corazon- As you do the excercise together, repeat these commands at least 15 times with them.

4. Now, use the command "abre el documento" to open a PPT slide. Make sure you have it already in a shortcut so it does not become a nightmare.

5. Copia el corazon y Pega el corazon en el documento =Copy paste. Model it, then have them do it with you, continue repeating the process and the phrase.

6. A very simple way to wrap-up the PPT is by simply pasting the hearts as they come, and the have the children type in a very simple Spanish phrase where they, again, repeat the focal word: Corazon/Corazones, and the names of the colors.

Example:

The sentence above should read "Mis corazones son: Morado, verde, azul, rosa, y amarillo.

**It might seem as a pretty small and simple sentence, but if you break it down, it includes a conjunction "y", the colors, the name of the shape in plural and the basic writing rules of colon, caps, and punctuation.

This activity is perfect for ESL learners as well. I hope you can use it. If you do, please write back and let me know how you modified it to your students' needs.

But before you click out, let me explain how this game can be an AMAZING Lingtechguistics tool.

Lesson Plan Objective: To teach the target lingo and the LingTECHlingo in a lesson with a Sustained Affective Stimulus using gogirlgames.

Target Lingo: (have this ready posted on the wall): Pastel, flor, fresa, estrella, amarillo, rojo, azul, verde, negro, muneca (doll), muneco (male doll), almeja, plantas, tope (top).

FOCAL WORD: (The word they will hear the most): Pastel (this is for them to single out from the beginning what will be the most important target word, and so they know exactly what the theme of the lesson is.

METHODOLOGY: OK- The kids know now the target lingo. Now, let's open the webpage topractice together the LINGTECHLINGO

LingTECHlingo: aprieta (click), lleva (drag), pon (put/place), agranda (enlarge), minimiza (minimize).

Now the students are have been exposed to TWO sets of target words. One set was broken down into a focal word, and then they were also exposed to picture words that are set on the walls.

The LingTECHlingo will be practiced orally and kinesthetically while the teacher will practice the commands at the same time as the children, using the computers, and having them repeat the words.

The KEY: You will have the students do the same cake for practice. You will decide how many items of what shape, and of what color, they are to place. You do this together, step by step, repeating the commands altogether.

You then explain to them how to fill out the (if in a template) pre-written paragraph where you will have them either fill out with the correct target word, or they can also re-write the entire paragraph on the space provided in the PPT. (Template recommended for smaller groups)

CONFUSED? Don't be! Follow the steps below and look at what should be your final product.

Using PowerPoint to teach shapes and colors: SPANISH/ESL 2.0

My favorite thing to teach is colors.

Colors are everywhere and in everything. Yet, of all the color lessons that I have taught in English, Spanish, German (ages ago), and French, one of my favorite central topics is the gumball machine.

Lesson Plan Objective: To teach target lingo (colors and shapes) and Lingtechlingo using a Sustained Affective Stimulus of creating gumballs with 'Autoshapes' into an animated PPT.

Target lingo: The colors

LingtechLingo: Abre (open), cierra (close), aprieta (click), lleva (drag), inserta (insert), colorea (color), busca el color (search for the color..), escribe (write/type), cambia (change)

METHODOLOGY

Step 1: Introduce the target lingo, post it for all to see, practice it once with repetition, discuss.

Step 2: LingTECHlingo- Using the computer, each student at a computer, practice kinesthetically the LingTECH process. Demonstrate first, then have the students do it along with you. Do as third time to see how much they've grasped.

Using Kidspiration 2 and Pixie to teach Second Languages

Kidspiration 2 and Pixie are one of many graph programs for younger students, which stemmed from Inspiration, its "grown up" counterpart.

**I have used the method of LingTECHguistics* to introduce vocabulary in full, second language immersion through a sustained affective stimulus in the form of a hands-on computer project.**

This is the product of the hard work:

Grade level: K, 1

Objective: To connect the name of the season to its symbols

To reinforce sound with print through writing

Process: For this project, I had already made the template. The students (Grade k and 1) were responsible for typing the season's name into each of the ovals. Then, using the Spanish LingTECHlingo: Busca (search), and Pega (paste) they had to find a picture on the gallery that was connected to the season. The project took 45 minutes.

PROJECT 2: ME GUSTA!

Grade Level: 2 (advanced) and 3rd

Objectives: To apply the terms they learned in the lesson on sports using the phrase "I Like" (Me gusta)

To be able to relate the sports to symbols

To expand writing skills through typing

To use Kidspiration as technology component.

Procedure: This group could do the process of selecting the pictures, typing, and formatting the bubbles because we had modeled previously.

Prior to the lesson, we did the traditional recognition excercise through pointing and mentioning the sports, and some TPR. Afterwards, they knew the LingTECHlingo for the directions:

Busca- search

Pega- paste

Escribe- write/type

Forma- Format/ form

The project took 45 minutes.

PROJECT 3: (Using Pixie, can also be done with Kidspiration)

Grade Level: 1,2,3

Objective: To web your favorite foods from the list that we learned.

Procedure: As an enrichment project, the students simply had to choose 10 foods from the list of nearly 50 foods learned in class. Already acquainted with the names, their job was to follow the LingTECHlingo to do the process:

Escribe- type/write

Busca- search

Pega- glue

Forma- format/form/put together

The project also took 45 minutes.
